Lets start off this special edition with some news from our Argentinian Correspondent, Daphne.
Hi Pat,
I remember a week ago, I said I would let you know how I got on about seeing two school acts on the same day. We were lucky, Agos' was at 12 noon, so we picked Ruben up from work to take him there, the whole thing was over in an hour, so we took him back to work, then went straight on to Tommy's at 1.30.. he's my sis -in-law's grandson, the only other family we have in this city.
The girls in Agos' class did majorettes (our city has its own group) the boys were Argentine football players. In Tommy's school, in his grade, the kids were anything that symbolizes Liberty, gardeners, police, nurses etc and he was a gardener.
We also attended an Independence Day supper dance Saturday night at the submariners club, a lunchparty Sunday with a singer group at the naval club, and went to the theatre Sunday night to see our dance group take part in the folk festivities. Long live National holidays!!! LOL! (Roll on Monday.. lets get back to normal haha.) ah we also went to a surprise seventieth birthday party Thursday night!!
Well here's the pics......
love and hugs Daphne

With TV - not the best entertainment at most - being totally taken over with World Cup soccer 24/7, I have just got through a second reading of a thick book I have had for a long time "Peking" by Anthony Grey. It is all about China in the time before and throughout the dictator "Chairman Mao". It is set round a chinese family, and a young English pastor, convinced he can bring China to a Christian way of thinking. He, and his young wife and new born baby are captured and taken on the long march across China. His wife is brutally killed, and his baby is brought up first by a cookboy, then later by a Chinese woman who has just lost her own baby. Under very extreme circumstances, the Chinese woman is also briefly the pastors lover, and she has a boy without him knowing. His daughter grows up, returns to China, and of the millions of Chinese, she has to fall in love with the boy who is unknowingly her half brother. He in turn is a very important figure in Mao's scene. The ugly truth comes out and causes great upset, in a land that is already under turmoil. The story ends on the death of Chairman Mao, and speaks of the political conflicts China faced on producing a replacement after 50 years. Its a lot of history interwoven with a bit of fiction, very good reading, if you have the patience for such a long story.

Ten Commandments of Animals
My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you will be painful to me. Remember that before you bring me home.
Give me time to understand what you want from me.
Place your trust in me - it's crucial to my well being. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You may have your work, your entertainment and your friends. I have only you.
Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice.
Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget.
Remember, before you hit me, that I have teeth that can crush the bones in your hand. Yet I choose not to bite you.
Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, or I've been in the sun too long, or my heart is getting old and weak.
Take care of me when I get old. You too, will grow old.
Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say, "I can't bear to watch it" or "Let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember, I love you!

One of the sections of our Pursuit of Excellence challenge is all about Service Challenges.

SERVICE CHALLENGES The services you select should be performed for a sustained period of time and in a quiet, unheralded way, without seeking acclaim and without thought for reward or reciprocation. - 1. Give special service to your own family. If you are not living at home, this service may involve roommates or friends or look upon those with whom you have the maximum frequent contacts as fitting this category.
- 2. Give significant service to individuals or groups outside your immediate family.
- 3. ....
- 4. .....
- 5. ....
EXAMPLES OF SERVICE CHALLENGES There are so many examples...use your imagination!
- 1. Teach an art or a skill to someone who cannot afford to pay for such training or who probably would not cultivate it without your help.
- 2. Be a special friend to one or more fatherless or motherless children and take them to worthwhile programs or activities, such as cultural or sports events, camping trips, or outings.
- 3. Assist the elderly, divorcees, those who live alone, neighbours, or others who may need help with household chores, lawn-cutting, snow shoveling, repair jobs, or yard work.
- 4. Write uplifting and encouraging letters to a friend. Continue writing even if the recipient's schedule does not permit an answer.
- 5. Assist people whose activities are restricted, such as those in nursing homes and hospitals or those who have some mental or physical handicap. Visit them, read to them or otherwise assist in any appropriate manner.
- 6. Assist a child needing help with homework, physical activity or cultural enrichment.
- 7. Give your time and physical talent to a meaningful project, serving in such positions as coach in an athletic program, youth camp program director, director of a neighbourhood sports clinic, den mother, or volunteer teacher's aide.
- 8. Participate in an effort to provide books for prisons, hospitals, convalescent homes, etc.
PEN PAL CLUB
How are things going with you and your penpal. Are you getting to know them a whole lot better? Is there anything you would like to share with us about them?
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Only Today
Whatever I may want to do
It must be done today.
There is no other time.
Yesterdays are but todays
Used and gone beyond my grasp.
Not one can ever be brought back;
Even as a bell can’t be unrung
Or a spoken, unintended word
Be readily retrieved before
It reaches someone’s ear.
Tomorrows are todays awaiting birth.
Each comes unbidden in the night
To arrive full-fledged for me to use
And do whatever I may want to do.Copyright © 2001 Leo VanMeer
Daphne, our Cookbook Queen chooses a recipe every week for us to try from our Circle's very own collection, which you can view here. Our Independance Day was July 9th and because it was an Argentine festivity, how about a recipe from Argentina, one from our marvellous collection of recipes from members all over the world:
Humitas- Corn Envelopes In The Husks WWWCOF COOKBOOK Yield: 6 Servings Daphne: RECIPE FROM ARGENTINA
Filling:
- 12 whole corn cobs 1 small red pepper
- 1 small onion milk
- ¼ kg goat's cheese (o pizza Salt, sugar, Red Pepper Powder, -cheese) -Basil, To Taste
- 100 Grs fat-Free Beef Broth
Apart, heat the fat and fry the chopped onion, then add the finely chopped red pepper, the salt and the red pepper powder. Next add a little warm milk and the grated corn grains, a teaspoon of dried or chopped fresh basil and if you like them sweet, add sugar to taste. Mix well and remove from the heat. If the preparation seems dry, add a little more warm milk. In some places like Tucuman ( north Argentina) they also add grated pumpkin.
Putting the envelopes together.
Wash the selected husks and put two together long sides overlapping. In the middle put about a dessert spoon of the mixture and a piece of cheese. Wrap over the long sides of the husks then the ends to form a packet about 3 square by 1 deep, and tie with a strip from other husks. The y are cooked in abundant boiling water , and simmered for about an hour or until the husks turn yellow.
Note; A more modern way of preparing the corn, would be to cut all the grains off the cob and put then them through the blender with pieces of red pepper and the fresh basil leaves. The mixture is also perfectly acceptable in pasty cases instead of wrapped in the husks. As Humitas they are usually served as a starter dish, one or two per person on a plate and opened and eaten with a knife and fork, the husks then discarded.
Please email Daphne with your personal "critique" of this recipe for publication in next week's newsletter.
P.S. We continue to accept favourite recipes and/or cookery tips to add to our cookbook so email your favourites to Daphne today!
The WWWCOF Cookbook consists of the following sections:
- Main recipes from our Recipe Circus and members
- About 200 of those and others put into Spanish
- Members special favourites, Seasonal or Regional recipes (dedicated to Claudia)
- The kitchen help and tips section
What a wonderful friendship recipe as each time you feed your starter you have at least a cup that you can give to a friend with the recipe so that they can continue on. Check it out in the cookbook and start yours today!
RESIGNATION
-
I am hereby tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would
like to accept the responsibilities of an 8 year-old again.
I want to go to McDonald's and think it's a four star restaurant.
I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make a sidewalk with rocks.
I want to think M&Ms are better than money because you can eat them.
I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer day.
I want to return to a time when life was simple, when all you knew were colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes, but that didn't bother you, because you didn't know what you didn't know and didn't care. All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried or upset.
I want to think the world is fair.
That everyone is honest and good.
I want to believe that anything is possible.
I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly excited by the little things again.
I want to live simple again.
I don't want my day to consist of computer crashes, mountains of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones.
I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams, the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow.
So...here's my checkbook and my car keys, my credit card bills and my 401k statements. I am officially resigning from adulthood.
And if you want to discuss this further, you'll have to catch me first, cause....
*.....TAG! You're IT.* -- BigSisPat
I like you because of who you are to me...A true friend.

And if I don't get this

Tonight at midnight your true love will realize they like you.
Something good will happen to you at 1:00-4:00 PM tomorrow.

It could be anywhere -- AOL, Yahoo, outside of school, anywhere.
Get ready for the biggest shock of your life.

Remember:
"A good friend will come bail you out of jail....
But a true friend will be sitting next to you saying.!

WE screwed up, but we had fun! "
Proud to be your Friend!

Make sure you read all the way down to the last sentence, and don't skip ahead. I've learned...that life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes. I've learned...that we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for. I've learned...that money doesn't buy class. I've learned...that it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular. I've learned...that under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved. I've learned...that the Lord didn't do it all in one day. What makes me think I can? I've learned...that to ignore the facts does not change the facts. I've learned. I've learned...that the less time I have to work, the more things I get done. To all of you...make sure you read all the way down to the last sentence. It's National Friendship Week. Show your friends how much you care. Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND, even if it means sending it back to the person who sent it to you. If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a circle of friends. HAPPY FRIENDSHIP WEEK TO YOU!!!!!! YOU ARE MY FRIEND AND I am honoured
